J&J Metro Moving and Storage
Founded in 1968
The year of 1968 started with President Lyndon Johnson in office and ended with the election of President Richard Nixon. During this year, Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated. The United States was heavily involved in the war in Vietnam and student demonstrations were causing university closures at home.
The car of the year was the Pontiac GTO and the average price of gas was 34 cents. The Space Program launched Apollo 7 which orbited the earth for 11 days in preparation for Apollo 8’s voyage to the moon. Top TV shows of the year were The Lucy Show, Andy Griffith, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and the Beverly Hillbillies. Top songs of the year included “Hey Jude,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Sittin on the Dock of the Bay.” While all this was going on around us, Metro Moving and Storage in Central Florida opened it’s doors and began moving families to their new homes. The offices and warehouse were located on Salana Avenue in Winter Park, Florida.
Original owner Jim Fuston, a long-time moving professional opened Metro Moving and Storage after moving from Atlanta with his family. This company soon became one of the best-known moving companies in central Florida. In 1977, Fuston, along with friend Jim Lasiter, opened another moving company called J&J Moving and Storage Company. (J&J came from Jim and Jim.)
In 1983 Richard Mease purchased J&J, and then in 1985, Mease, along with Gary J. Bergenske and Rose Bergenske, purchased Metro from Fuston. Once again, the two companies were under the same ownership. It was at that time that the two names were merged into J&J Metro Moving and Storage. The company flourished by buying up several other small moving companies in the Central Florida area, giving them the strength to serve more people’s moving needs even better. The company expanded their services into commercial moving with clients including the State of Florida, Florida Hospital, UCF, Orange County, Bank of America, and many more. Their slogan became ”We like our reputation and so will you.”
In 1987, J&J Metro purchased property in the Maitland area and constructed a brand new office and warehouse building. This has been their home office for the past 25 years. The modern office and secure warehouse building provide an excellent facility for employees and customers as well.
In 1989, Mease retired, soon after, Rose Bergenske retired and Gary J. Bergenske became the sole owner. Although the names have changed, for 45 years, this company has been family-owned and under the direction of family members who care about providing great service to its customers. This is a rock- solid company with a well-known name for providing value at a reasonable price.
In 2011 G. Jason Bergenske – Vice President, representing the Bergenske family’s third generation to hold a management position and ownership in the business, arrived with great enthusiasm and knowledge. He brought in new technology to help increase efficiency, re-branded the entire companies public image, and began large marketing campaigns including television.
